CULTURE

History

Peccioli - centro storicoThe name is attested for the first time in the year 793 as “Picciole” and probably derives from the Latin term picea, ie wild pine. The consolidation of the village took place however in medieval times around a castle of the counts Della Gherardesca, who already had many possessions in the surrounding area. In the twelfth century the accounts ceded the castle to the Bishop of Volterra who, facing the expansion of Pisa, made it a defensive bulwark of his city. During the following years the castle was progressively enlarged and strengthened: the village and the fortress located on the hill of the “Castellaccia”, were in fact enclosed by a first wall. From this it was excluded the southern part, that is the area of the Pieve di San Verano, because, like all the churches, in case of war or siege, it had to be ready to welcome the faithful and the peasants who lived in open country.

In 1282 the Guelphs of Peccioli rose against the Ghibelline Pisa and the Maritime Republic had to give up almost all the castles of the Valdera. Taking advantage of the scorching defeat suffered by Pisa in the battle of Meloria, in 1284 the Bishop of Volterra invoked and obtained the protection of Florence. From 1406 the town passed definitively under the Florentine aegis. In 1531 Tuscany became the Grand Duchy and, with Ferdinando I ° Medici, there was a new administrative order, as well as a period of peace and political stability. This situation continued until the arrival of the Habsburg family Lorena at the helm of the state. The latter started the first works for land reclamation, which further encouraged the development of agricultural activities and wine production. The political situation remained unchanged until the Unification of Italy.
