La Nuova Musiva is a workshop of artistic craftsmanship specializing in the technique of the “Florentine Mosaic”. In the workshop, directed by the artist Lituana Di Sabatino, projects are planned, commissioned works are carried out and the challenges presented by the stones are constantly confronted.
The “Florentine Commesso” technique, later referred to simply as “Florentine Mosaic”, goes straight back to one of the ancient handicraft and artistic manufactory of the grand-ducal era, when, in 1588 in Florence, the Grand Duke Ferdinando I de ‘Medici ordered the work to realize the great Chapel of the Princes inside the Basilica of San Lorenzo, with inlaid marble.
Unlike traditional mosaic made with tesserae, the “Florentine mosaic” does not use geometric tesserae, but carves larger pieces, chosen for color, opacity, brilliance and nuances of the veins, creating a figured design.
Starting from a basic design, mosaics made of pieces of natural hard stones (calcedones, jaspers, lapis lazuli, malachite, etc …) are chosen according to the subject to be colored and shaded, then hand cut through the action joint of a wooden bow with an iron wire and abrasive powders. The pieces are glued together and then polished.
It can be create works of art of extraordinary value, from furniture to various objects, to perfect copies of paintings.
