CLASSICAL ITALIAN SCULPTURE WORKSHOP

Be immersed in the figurative sculpture tradition of Renaissance italy with 42 hours of personalized instruction.  A 12 day  sculpture immersion and workshop with Maestro Gabriele Vicari and David Hunwick in the world-famous Tommasi Studio.  Savour the sights, sounds and tastes of Pietrasanta, International Centre of Sculpture  and go behind the scenes at marble carving ateliers and learn the secrets of the foundry process of lost wax bronze casting.

Maestro Gabriele VicariMAESTRO GABRIELE VICARI

Gabriele Vicari was born in Lucca (Tuscany) in 1971. As an acclaimed portrait sculptor, in 2009 he won the international “Portrait Pangolin” prize organized by the National Portrait Gallery, London. He has a number sculpture and painting commissions on permanent display in public and private collections across Europe and beyond : Denver, Victoria, Santa Maria a Monte, Yale, Bruxelles, Camaiore, London, Oslo, Florence, Cefalù.

Many qualified journalists, as well as prestigious names in national and foreign art criticism, have voiced enthusiastic words about him. In 2013 he founded with fellow sculptor David Hunwick, a school of sculpture, holding sessional classes in Victoria, Canada and Pietrasanta, Italy. The art of Vicari draws upon the great Italian figurative tradition, especially Tuscan, which has in its technical perfection and formal harmony an essential rule and principal to create expressive authenticity.

DAVID HUNWICK

David HunwickHe is an English sculptor and instructor born in Kent. David specializes in teaching sculpture, completing commission pieces, and mold making and casting. Since emigrating to Canada in 2001, David has worked on public, private and commercial projects. He founded The Sculpture Studio in 2008. His artwork is collected worldwide. David’s sculptures are currently located in many private and public collections in The UK; Australia; Germany and Canada. David was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh.

Also exhibited at the Whitworth Gallery in Manchester at the New Contemporaries show and had sculpture sited at the world-renowned Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Some of David’s public sculptures are on display at the Sidney Sculpture walk; Oak Bay sculpture trail; Kingsbrae sculpture garden, NB, in 2013 and the Castlegar Sculpture walk in 2014. In 2009-2010 David was commissioned to work on the Blue Whale project for University of British Columbia. Currently, David is also working on molding and casting another major first nation public sculpture which will be installed at Fraser Valley University in the Fall of 2017.

Pietrasanta arte

Pietrasanta, well-know as the International Centre of Sculture, is an historical  Tuscan town located a few kilometers from the famous Versilia beach, not far from the Alpi Apuane. The roots of Versilia’s artistic marble-working tradition go far back in time. Even Michelangelo visited Pietrasanta and availed himself of the precious work of the local artisans. The studios, workshops, and foundries in the territory are numerous and often open to visitors. These are artisan concerns, often run by families, where skills are handed down from generation to generation .The ArtigianArt Pietrasanta association unites more than 40 companies working in the marble, mosaic, intarsia, iron and steel, bronze-casting and molding, clay sculpture, and artistic printing sectors.

CARRARA

Cave di Marmo Tour - Carrara

Carrara , the marble city, is located in Lunigiana area  not so far from Pietrasanta. Carrara marble is a type of white or blue-grey marble of high quality, popular for use in sculpture and building decor. Carrara marble has been used since the time of Ancient Rome.The Apuan Alps above Carrara show evidence of at least 650 quarry sites. The Carrara quarries have produced more marble than any other place on earth.  The most prestigious marble of Carrara is the Statuario, a pure white marble.
