Life Is Beautiful: Roberto Benigni’s masterpiece, which received three Oscar (Best Actor, Best Foreign Film, and Best Score), was shot in Arezzo. The city is the ideal setting for the comical conquest of the beautiful teacher by the character of Benigni. The town also reveals the inevitable that happens later in the film, with signs prohibiting Jews and fascist suppression.

One of the most prominent locations of the movie is Villa Masini in Montevarchi (Arezzo), a splendid example of Art Nouveau and Art Deco style. The beautiful house shot from different angles, provides the various sets for the home of the character Dora (Nicoletta Braschi), the future wife of Guido (Benigni Robert), the Grand Hotel where Guido works as a waiter and the residence of the manager of the hotel. Currently, the villa is private property, but is still visitable.

Most city scenes were filmed in the beautiful Tuscan town of Arezzo. Famous are the scenes where Benigni rides his bike through the narrow streets of the medieval center, to the picturesque Piazza Grande. In Castiglion Fiorentino (Arezzo) Guido is acclaimed by the confused crowd awaiting the passage of Vittorio Emanuele III. Also Cortona (Arezzo) was included in the shoot: it is outside the Teatro Signorelli, in the pouring rain, where Guido meets Dora, paving the way for a genuine love story that will accompany the audience until the closing scene of the movie.
